Here are some examples:
Education
University of Plymouth The Tamar Science Park is recognised as one of the best of its kind in the UK. It’s jointly operated by Plymouth City Council, Plymouth University and the South West Regional Development Agency and attracts a range of high tech entrepreneurial businesses.
The University of Plymouth is a founding partner – and Surf has been involved in a five year contract to provide a high-speed, secure fibre optic cable infrastructure linking the science park data centre building with the university’s main machine rooms at its Drake’s Circus campus. Because the university can now store all its data at two locations, it means that in the event of an emergency or major failure no data is lost.
As the university’s director of research and enterprise, Professor Julian Beer, says: “The Tamar Science Park remains one of our primary strategic partners in delivering our mission as the enterprise university in the region’s most enterprising city.
“This strong relationship, drawing together education, science and business, ensures a key focus in Plymouth for innovation and knowledge transfer, helping to drive the region’s knowledge economy and science base.”
Data Centres
Next Generation Data (NGD) Europe Surf Telecoms connects to NGD with infrastructure and fibre optic services at their multi million pound mega Data Centre in Newport South Wales.
Tamar Science Park The Tamar Science Park is located near Derriford Hospital in north Plymouth and is jointly operated by the City Council, the University of Plymouth and the South West Regional Development Agency. It attracts a range of high tech entrepreneurial businesses. Its new multi £-million Data Centre opened recently and Surf invested in connecting the science park as a Point of Presence to its own fibre optic cable infrastructure as it has developed. This new PoP offers customers access to the centre’s impressive facilities, complemented by Surf’s quality infrastructure, services and solutions.
Fibre Broadband
Virgin Media Working in partnership with Virgin Media, Surf is currently trialling the distribution of fibre optic broadband using aerial deployment via electricity poles. Western Power Distribution’s electricity infrastructure reaches over 2.5 million homes across South West England and South and West Wales. This novel solution could provide homes and businesses in rural communities with access to high-speed broadband. The trial continues until 2011.
MPLS Installation
£2 million investment provides business continuity for customers In 2002 Surf Telecoms was one of the first service providers to compliment its traditional PDH/SDH services by introducing an Ethernet based networks using Cisco Carrier Ethernet Solutions.
Initially deploying 11 core network switches of 7600’s, 3500’s and 3550’s the network evolved rapidly to meet customer demand and by 2008 there were in excess of 90 switches and routers on the Ethernet network. With the network at near full capacity and significant increase in demand for 1Gb services and improved features across the Surf Telecoms region it became clear that a new network was required.
A decision was made to invest £2 million in building a new Cisco MPLS network which would tackle both issues of the ageing network and the higher bandwidth demand from customers. Using the Cisco 7600 Series, the capabilities and performance of the Cisco Carrier Ethernet solution contribute to Surf Telecoms business services for connecting multiple locations together, providing customers with business continuity and ensuring diverse routing for disaster recovery capabilities.
The MPLS network also allows Surf to offer customers routing capabilities without the need for additional equipment and to provide customers with variable levels of Quality of Service (QoS) to enable them to prioritise the data being transported for their networks.
With the technology provided by Cisco Surf Telecoms can continue to expand their portfolio of value added services and deliver bandwidth options beyond the gigabit level the MPLS network is well suited to satisfy the current and future Ethernet requirements for Surf Telecoms and their customers.
